3 High School guys toe the line for the start of the guy's 3200 at the State Meet; each with their own unique goals. Rafferty: a freshman who came into the season with the goal of breaking the school record. My words to him were it won't happen during your first attempt but we can get there this season. Sam: a Senior who played baseball for 2 years and then COVID kept him from having a junior track season. He is looking to set a PR to finish his one and only Track season. Will: also a Senior who has done well with shorter distances but has at times struggled to complete the longer distance races. His goal, introduced by me but agreed upon by both of us, is that he will complete the race!
What I love about this story is that all 3 guys met their goals! A new school record by over 10 seconds for Rafferty, a triumphant PR for Sam, and the one that makes my heart sing just a little sweeter...In spite of wanting to quit, Will took a walk break instead and was able to cross the finish line and completed his final HS race!
For me as a coach, setting and accomplishing goals is a piece of a larger puzzle. Sharing the ups and downs of the journey and learning life lessons are where the magic happens!
My endurance journey began my Junior Year of HS when the Track coach at my school saw me running up and down the basketball court. He encouraged me to come run for him that spring and my Coach Krowlowitz helped me to 2nd place in the 800 at the State meet that season! I was hooked. I ran XC the next fall finishing with an All State performance and then went on to win the State Championship for the 800 and the 1600 the following spring. My success allowed me to gain a partial scholarship to the University of South Carolina where I ran Cross Country, Indoor and Outdoor Track for 2 years. Once I stopped running as a NCAA athlete, I began my coaching journey by working with a local HS program as an Assistant Track Coach! 25 years later (2022) I am proud to say I have continued to pursue both my passion for competing as an Age Group athlete and my desire to help others set and reach their own performance and lifestyle goals! I love that I can tell all my athletes that I still do all the things I ask of them!
